This 'n That with Smoky Slate

Time to say goodbye to February. It's been the snowiest February since at least 1885, here in Minnesota. I'm sure that is true for other states too. So, how about saying goodby to it with an all gray and white card? I didn't actually plan it this way but it came together with a few experimental pieces on my desk. Except for the silver thread and metallic dots are pieces that I made to try with other cards but they didn't work out ... until now.

This more or less follows the Global Design Project sketch challenge this week. I added the silver thread for my circle once I realized that most of the other elements were there in one form or another.

Hints:

The Smoky Slate Buffalo Check was something that I really thought was going to work with a Basic Gray piece ... but it didn't. That is a really cool piece of Country Floral too. I'm still looking for the right combination there.
This all started to work a lot better once I put a layer of Whisper White under the vellum.
4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card base.
3 1/4" x 4 1/2" vellum: Emboss it before you cut. You may lose pieces when you trim with the somewhat brittle vellum but that will be part of the charm.
3 1/2" x 4 3/4" piece of Whisper White under the vellum. This doesn't need to be thick. I used a part of a card that didn't turn out...

February Paper Pumpkin and Alternatives

Have you tried a Paper Pumpkin subscription? It's kind of like getting a stamping surprise in a box once a month. You can read more about how Paper Pumpkin works here. You can sign up for a month, a few months or even a year.

My February Paper Pumpkin arrived last week and I had a chance to make a few cards with it today.

This month's stamp set came with more than enough supplies to make 3 each of these cards. These are made just according the directions that come in the box, with the exception that I modified the black and white striped card for the stripes to be vertical.

Here are some closer shots:

I split one of the succulent sheets in half to make the following cards adding only the frosted Fresh Fig flower embellishment on the black card and the Granny Apple Green card base on the second. All of the other layers, stamps, twine and ink were included in the Paper Pumpkin.

Here is one that uses only Paper Pumpkin supplies, just mixing them up a bit.

This card adds just the Light Rich Razzleberry and a few green Blends to color in the image on the back side of the vellum, which, along with all of the other supplies, was included in the Paper Pumpkin. The strip of the succulent pattern was trimmed off of the sheet when I turned the black and white striped card on its' side, shortening the design sheet in the process.

This card uses paper and stamps from the Paper Pumpkin:

I embossed the "YOU" + "can do incredible things" in silver on a card that I had pieced together from the kit. ( I cut a 1 1/4" strip of two cards and exchanged them.) Such great words of encouragement!
I added an embossed flower from Tea Together and colored it with Light Poppy Parade and Light Mossy Meadow Blends.

The next card was inspired by the tea cup planter stamp and a sketch comes from The Paper Players:

This is the only card I made that assumes all of the kit supplies have been depleted. I used only Whisper White cardstock, though I did emboss the cup and used a few embossing folders on my layers. The embellishments are from Faceted Dots.

Isn't that little tea cup planter sweet?

I embossed it in clear embossing powder and colored it with Pool Party, Soft Seafoam and Meadow Moss Blends.
The cup was cut with a circle from the Stitched Shapes Framelits.
The smaller rectangle is embossed with the Subtle embossing folder.
The larger rectangle layer is embossed with the Country Floral embossing folder which is available only as a free item with a $50 order during Sale-A-Bration. Sale-A-Bration runs through March 31 or while supplies last.
The embellishment dots are from the Faceted Dots.

#simplestamping with Painted Seasons

Do you do anything to get to know your new stamps? I had a line I used to say at workshops, "You can possess a stamp or stamp set but you don't truly own it until you have played with it enough to truly understand its possibilities and limitations." In theory I should have a little play date with every new set I get though I have to confess that doesn't always happen. Recently, however, I did have such a session when I first received the bundle Painted Seasons. Today I 'm recreating that session on Facebook and this is one of the cards I will show.

This is pretty much just stamps, ink and paper. The ink color for this one is Blueberry Bushel, which is just a little brighter than Night of Navy.
The images in this set are considered Distinktive images, which are made using a special process that Stampin' Up!® is patenting. There is a great deal of depth and I was surprised at how well it worked to combine and layer them. Aside from being great individually, these images layer beautifully.
The message is from Kindness and Compassion.
I couldn't resist adding a few Happiness Blooms dots before I took the picture, but I still think it is simple! Note how the Night of Navy dots still work with Blueberry Bushel. The same is true of the Night of Navy Gingham ribbon, one of my favorites.

This, along with the other cards I did, also fits the challenge over at Paper Players which is to make a monochromatic card which is also CAS or "clean and simple". Monochromatic means one color - it could be a single color or different shades or tones of a color.

Stitched All Around to the Rescue

Today's card comes to you thanks to a leftover piece from Tuesday's card and a sketch challenge from Hand Stamped Sentiments:

This is a pretty challenging sketch. Putting the sentiment so high up is not a normal practice for me. I tend to put the "heavier" or visually weighty items closer to the bottom of the card and I couldn't imagine what sentiment would work up there. Well, that is until I pulled out Stitched All Around, a set whose companion dies had 4 different die shapes that can be used for greetings , including one measuring approximately 1/2" x 1". That and some butterflies from Butterfly Gala. Anything with butterflies can't be too heavy, right?

And, how could I resist that large stitched die that was perfect for the oval in the sketch.

The left over Country Floral strip is approximately 1" wide and goes really well with the stitches in the Stitched All Around dies AND the Quilt Top embossing folder I used on the base layer.
The butterflies are stamped with Daffodil Delight and colored slightly with a blender pen using ink form the ink pad.
Very Vanilla Baker's Twine and a few pearls help me finish off the last few elements of the sketch.
This is a standard A2 card, measuring 4 1/4" x 5 1/2"

Country Floral LOVES Petal Pink More Than Words

...well, More Than Words is actually the name of a new stamp set. We will get to that in a minute but first get a look at just how much the Country Floral embossing folder loves Petal Pink!

Don't you just love it when all these color coordinated products seem to just fall together into awesome cards?

I'm putting the final touches on preparations for a Facebook Live about using embossing folders, Country Floral in particular. (Follow my Facebook Page to be notified when my Facebook Lives occur as I don't have a set schedule yet.) I wanted to show that in spite of the fact that it is hard to trim away any of the beautiful embossed Country Floral image, you can make a beautiful card with just a portion of the design.

I did this Petal Pink embossed piece when I was running a bunch of different colors of cardstock through the Big Shot with white craft ink on the folder. The effect is subtle on this particular color so I would say using the white craft ink is optional. If you do want to use this apply the ink directly from the pad to the inside of the label side of the folder. You will need to use a little dish soap to clean the leftover ink off your folder. I usually do several before cleaning the folder.
I trimmed the embossed piece to a 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" square. I did plan this before making the cuts, wanting the large rose to be somewhat centered but above where I would tie the bow. Save the scraps for another project. They are just too pretty to toss.
Cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock to 3 3/8" x 4 5/8".
Attach the embossed piece with adhesive. I used multi-purpose liquid adhesive on the parts that weren't debossed as you look at it from the back - and lightly all around the edges.
Stamp your greeting on the bottom of the Whisper White panel in Petal Pink ink.
Tie a piece of Petal Pink/Whisper White Variegated ribbon around the bottom of the embossed part before attaching to your card. You will want to do this so that the tie or bow does not interfere with your greeting.
Add a Petal Pink flower from the Frosted Flower embellishments. Both the ribbon and the flower are part of the Floral Romance Suite of products.
Prepare a card base by folding a 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" piece of Whisper White cardstock in half and adhering a 4" x 5 1/4" piece of Petal Pink paper from the Subtles Designer Series Paper 6" x 6" stack to the front. I think the shaded Petal Pink sheets work better than the Petal Pink and White sheets for this particular card.
Attach the embossed piece layer to your card base.
Send this card to someone who might need to be encouraged in their bravery.

I did not envision this as a "Pink Breast Cancer" card as I designed it. I've always loved pink and the warm "peachiness" of Petal Pink has quickly become one of my favorite of the new colors. As the card came together and I was deciding which greeting seemed right I was drawn to the Bravery message but hesitated. I know that there are those who have battled cancer who resent the "pink" campaigns along with those who are energized by them. In the end I decided the words still fit and taking back pink for all range of occasions is the right thing to do. So, if you are inspired to make this card I ask two things.

Please don't view this only as a pink breast cancer card but as a bravery card. It could, and should, apply to MANY situations.
If you are planning to give a card like this to someone who is battling breast cancer, please consider what their views may be. If you don't know how they view the "pink thing" please consider using another color. If you know that pink will give them strength then by all means go for it

Romancing the New Country Floral Embossing Folder

Hello papercrafters!

I spent yesterday re-organizing my stamp shelves and cleaning well, actually, playing with the new Country Floral Embossing Folder and then just plain experimenting with ink and the Flowering Desert stamp set. And then one thing kept leading to another and my desk still needs to be cleaned. Let's just say I have a LOT of new ideas that need to turn into finished projects so that I can share them with you.

Anyway, when I saw today's color challenge at Splitcoaststampers (Pear Pizzazz + Daffodil Delight + White) I new exactly what I would finish first. Besides, as we stare down another winter storm warning something summery is called for.

I had almost the exact card I would need laid out ready to assemble except I needed to switch up the yellows to Daffodil Delight instead of Crushed Curry. (Once it is watered down, Crushed Curry would still easily work with the Daffodil Gingham. It just wouldn't have been true to the challenge.) Now I still have an embossed piece that will become something else.

I colored right onto the inner embossing folder (Stampin' Up! logo side) with my Daffodil Delight and Pear Pizzazz markers, boosting the color in the center of the flowers with a tiny bit of Daffodil Delight ink refill. If I was to do it again I would use Old Olive or even a little Mossy Meadow. The Pear Pizzazz got a little lost with the water.
Once I thought I had enough color I spritzed it and ran it through the Big Shot with a piece of watercolor paper.
This is a 4 1/2" x 6" card - I didn't want to trim any more of the embossed layer than I had to.
The edge is from the Gingham Gala Designer Series Paper 6" x 6" stack along with a Whisper White die cut lace edge - Delicate Lace Edgelits.
I tied some Pear Pizzazz Shimmer ribbon over the "seam".
The message and it's embellishments are from the Wonderful Romance Bundle. I thought the delicate oval would be just right and the little flowers echo the 4 petaled flowers in the embossing folder. A bonus with this set of thinlets is that there are of the little flower dies so that you don't have to make so many passes through the Big Shot. I used Pear Pizzazz and Daffodil Delight to stay with the color challenge.
There's not a lot of white space with this one but maybe that isn't Country Floral's style.

Wood Ring Twist

Hello stampers! I hope you are having a good weekend. Today I'm sharing a card that I actually started last summer. Two different challenges inspired me to dig out this piece that I started coloring on a road trip:

Here is the challenge that inspired me to hunt around for that piece...

... and here is the challenge that inspired me to make my card a mixed media AND CAS card.

I thought the colors and the circle images mimicked the rainbow background in Steffi's Global Design Project card. The CAS Mix Up challenge lists several methods/media and you need to use at least 2. I used alcohol inks (Blends), Heat embossing(both white and clear), and, of course, die-cutting.

I stamped the Tree Rings background stamp in Memento's Tuxedo Black ink and colored with numerous Blends, all in the Brights family. The centers were done with the darker colors. I did not know what I would be using this for when I colored it. I just wondered what it would look like in colors other than traditional wood tones.
I cut the piece in two thinking I might make one card for each challenge but this card came together so well using both challenges that I now have an extra piece for another project.
I used Glad Press 'N Seal to keep all of the "positive" and "negative" pieces from the "celebrate" die cut. This die is from the Celebrate You thinlet set. You need the leftover pieces from the e's, l and r to be on the background.
The patterned "celebrate" was clear embossed with Versamark and clear embossing powder.
I added 4 additional Basic Black behind my embossed "celebrate"s to add dimension.
You Deserve It! (from Birthday Cheer - in the Occasions catalog) was embossed with white embossing powder, trimmed and cut into pieces to adhere to the bottom of my panel.
The panel is layered on to Basic Black cardstock so that it would be stiffer to pop up on my card with Stampin' Dimensionals.
This could be a birthday, graduation or congratulations card.

moving on to...St. Patricks Day...

Valentine's Day 2019 is in the books and, other than a few birthdays, we are looking ahead to St Patrick's Day. Especially where I live in St. Paul, MN. So it's time to check out how some of Stampin' Up!'s current line up of stamps do up The Green.

I've had this card in mind for a while now, since it is basically a version of a card I did last fall. Since the weekly challenge, What Will You Stamp, is featuring the stamp set I'd planned to use this morning was the time to get the card done.

This also makes use of my favorite group of papers: the color family 6"x 6" stacks.

I brought in almost all of the elements of my inspiration card, a Wishing You Well thank you card.

My focal point is stamped on a circle cut with the second largest circle die from the Stitched Shapes framelits. I started by stamping the greeting in Call Me Clover and then stamped the little three part detail in Mint Macaron. I spaced these by first stamping at 12 - 3 - 6 - 9 clock positions. Then I stamped between each existing image and then repeated this. If you make the middle part almost touch the stitching from the die your's will probably be a little more even than mine. I didn't come up with that trick until part way through my circle.
I colored "Luck" with the dark Mint Macaron Blends and popped the circle onto the corresponding Call Me Clover Scallop circle.
I stamped the 4-leafed clover with Call Me Clover, colored with Call Me Clover Blends and fussy cut it. I popped a green (Tranquil Tide) pearl from the Artisan Pearls in to the middle and attached it to my circle.
Though I used the Foliage Frame Framelits for the embossed detail under my circle in the original, I decided to look at what I could use for the same purpose from the Seasonal Layers Thinlets. This is the set I pull out for the waves/scallop border and it didn't seem necessary to use a 4th set of dies. I chose to try the snowflakes. The way this winter is going it is a good bet that St. Paul will still have snow around for the St. Patrick's Day parade. You could also use the detail maple leaf die. March is kind of close to maple syrup time in our part of the country. With either of these you will want to the Big Shot embossing mats or similar sandwich in order to emboss rather than cut with these dies.
I used the leaf punch and Painted Harvest leaf detail stamp (stamped in Mint Macaron - 2nd generation) for one of the leaflets peeking out behind my circle. The other was punched from a scrap of vellum cardstock.
I lined my scallops with a second scallop cut from Call Me clover and added striped DSP from the In-Color 2018-2020 pack.
I wrapped 1/8" Call Me Clover grosgrain ribbon around the card twice before tying a bow at the bottom of the card. I used a mini glue dot to hold the bow at the angle I wanted.
That's it. Did case-ing my previous card work?

Pink and Gray with Stripes and Dots...

It's Friday! Today's card was inspired by this week's Paper Players' color challenge.

With the all the other new pinks and reds I think Melon Mambo has been a bit ignored so it was good to use some of it on this card.

Both roses from Tea Together were stamped multiple times in Basic Gray on Thick Whisper White cardstock.
I used the Light Smoky Slate blends and the Light Lovely Lipstick Blends (which in my book is closer to Melon Mambo than you can get with the marker). I added just a tiny bit of Dark in the center of the large rose and some shadows.
The roses are cut out with the Spot of Tea Framelits which are one of the Sale-A-Bration selections (free with a $100 order!)
After preparing a Whisper White card base, I created a 2 3/4" x 3
I tied some White Polka Dot Tulle ribbon around the seam so that the bow is pretty much off to the side so that I had room to add the flowers on the left side.
The panel is adhered to the card base with Stampin' Dimensionals.
A small greeting from Itty Bitty Greetings is perfect stamped about 1/4" or so below the panel.
A few Glitter Enamel Dots in Melon Mambo finish it off beautifully.

Dies with Patterned Paper continued...

I didn't get a blog entry posted yesterday but I DID get a Facebook Live done showing how I assemble these designer series paper (DSP) and die cut cards. Today I'm showing you some of the cards I shared on the video. I won't go into the details because I've blogged about the "how to" here and there are even more hints on the Facebook Live. I will provide product lists for each card individually at the end of this blog post.

The first two cards feature patterned paper from the Painted Seasons Bundle which becomes available as a Free Sale-A-Bration item with a $100 merchandise order (US) tomorrow, February 15, 2019. Obviously this offering will be while supplies last and it will end when Sale-A-Bration ends on March 31st.

I used the border die from the Flourish Thinlets and a greeting from Life is Grand, a set from this year's Occasions catalog. Both are done in Early Espresso.

This border die is from the Petals and More thinlets. My greeting is from the Occasions' stamp set Strong and Beautiful and it fits into the little tag die from the Wood Crate Framelits. The ribbon is Pool Party 3/8" Shimmer Ribbon. They don't show well in the first photo but I also used the Granny Apple Green Glitter Enamel Dots.

The Happy Birthday thinlet is cut from How Sweet It Is DSP . The Glitter Enamel Dots also work perfectly with the How Sweet It Is suite of products. Please note that the enamel dots are also the free gift you receive from me with a $50 purchase with my hostess code this month.

Don't you just love the gears from Geared Up Garage Grapefruit Grove foil? This also features Classic Garage DSP.

Does this look familiar? This is another version of the All My Love/Be Mine card that started it all. This time it is backed with vellum which allows embellishments such as Happiness Blooms Enamel Dots to be placed within the frame you use.

As you can see this type of card can be done with a variety of papers and dies. Check out your stash and see what you can use to try this.
