Happy May 7th everyone!
Today I'm hosting my first color combination as part of its design team over at Splitcoaststampers. It is a tradition that we make a title using parts of the color names so ... can you guess my colors? Crushed Curry + Granny Apple Green + Melon Mambo. Yes, I wanted something bright! My customer gifts for April were product samples of things that came in Brights so I jumped on the chance to choose Melon Mambo and Granny Apple Green. Daffodil Delight wasn't available for me to choose for this challenge so I went with Crushed Curry. What a happy surprise when I saw how well these worked together. This color challenge also has an "optional" dessert so I decided that I would like to see some stripes!
I love adding stripes to my cards. SO many options! There are stripes in Stampin' Up!'s color grouping DSP. Several stamp sets have stripes. There is even an embossing folder with scalloped stripes. For this first card I decided to do something a little different and made my own stripes with strips of Basic Black and Whisper White cardstock.
- I cut a bunch of black and white stripes in random widths. After running a few strips of tape down the front of my card, I started alternating between black and white as I carefully added strips. I started at the top and butted the edge of the next one right next to the previous strip. I cut my strips a bit wider than 4 1/4” so that I could trim off excess instead of having to be too careful when lining them up.
- "Enjoy Today" is from the Good Morning Magnolia stamp set. This set has couple of classically elegant fonts for its greetings. I stamped this in Memento Tuxedo Black. One good thing about having separate strips is that when you stamp the message on crooked you can just rip of that strip and replace with with another. Ask me how I know!
- The flowers were cut with the dies from the Good Morning Magnolia bundle, Magnolia Memory Dies. While light or white would be expected for magnolias, I decided maybe these could be some other imaginary Crushed Curry and Melon Mambo blooms. The petals were sponged in the center and then curled with a stylus - or pencil.I traced a line in the smallest petal die to get the lines on the Melon Mambo bloom.
- The dies have a variety of leaves - and two of each: large and small "skeleton" leaves and a solid small leaf that also cuts out a stamped leaf. You can layer the two small leaves as I did in this card.
- I polished this off with some Granny Apple Green Glitter Dots, the inspiration for my April gifts.
I had something else to play with while I was working with these colors: Stampin' Up!'s Everything is Rosy Product Medley! It was a little hard to bypass the glamorous colors with that suite but these bright colors were a great way to get a feel for what the stamps and dies could do - outside of the colors provided with the medley.
- This card makes use of the Granny Apple Green striped DSP. I'm really going to miss this stuff when it is discontinued in less than a month. It comes in every color except black and white. Each color has a sheet with light and dark stripes/light and dark dots and another sheet with white stripes and dots. While I'm sure I will come to love the patterns that Stampin' Up is replacing these with, I'm REALLY going to miss my dots and stripes. I even have a Pinterest Board dedicated to this paper: DoTs & StRiPes. As I write this it appears that all color families of this DSP are still available in my store. Get them while you can!
- The border die in the Everything is Rosy medley is delicate but easily cut on one pass with my Big Shot. It is designed to just cut your edge so I hand trimmed it down to a smaller border.
- The stamp images have wonderful variation in depth. This set will obviously need another play session very soon.
- "Dear Friend" actually comes stacked with one word on top of the other. The words are just far enough apart that I was able to easily ink up only one word at a time with a regular sized stamp pad. Lucky me!
- Gotta add those Glitter Dots!
I'm starting to think about my June color palette. It will feature one of the new In Colors: Seaside Spray, Purple Posy, RococoRose, Terracotta Tile, Pretty Peacock - along with 3-4others. Do you have one you would like to see me choose. Leave me a comment!
Also, thank you for your patience with my irregular posting lately. I need cut back on my evening screen time which means I need to do my blogging in earlier in the day. I'm sure it will be better once I get a new routine worked out!
