A Goodbye to Country Floral with a Hello for Dressed to Impress

I'm really going to miss of few of the retiring embossing folders, especially one of my all time favorites, Country Floral 3D so I had to do a remake of this card when I set out to make one of this year's Mother's Day Cards.

I inked up the folder with white craft ink before embossing a piece of Basic Gray cardstock. I've had questions in the past a name for this technique and settled on calling it Carved Stone.
I added some wood trim to warm up the stone look with woodgrain paper from the Pressed Petals DSP. I not only embossed my greeting but also trimmed my stone piece and added a couple of die cut sprigs (Positive Thoughts dies).
The Pressed Petals Specialty DSP, as all Designer Series Papers, will retire this year. I particularly love the woodgrain patterns in Pressed Petals - and I'll let you in on a little preview. We WILL have more woodgrain in the new catalog!!!
The flowers from the Dressed to Impress Bundle were stamped with Basic Gray ink and colored with Blends. The Dressed to Impress stamps and coordinating dies will carry over into the new catalog but they will no longer be as a bundle with 10% off.

A New Take on Grandma's House

When I made this card a while back it reminded me of a line I saw years ago at my mom's house, where our children spent many wonderful weeks and visits often without us. Now they still visit my parents but they need to travel a little further and go to Arizona.While I'm certainly old enough to be a Grandma, nobody in my family seems interested in that right now and that's all good.

Today this card's greeting makes me think of so many of my friends who are staying at home, missing out on time spent with their grandchildren. I'm posting it today to bid adios to this adorable little "grandma" set and the See a Silhouette DSP I used to create it's colorful setting. Both are retiring. As is the Crinkly Crushed Curry Seam Binding. Thankfully the oval die cuts are sticking around.

The pieced painterly look of the See A Silhouette makes a colorful background, a little reminiscent of a batik quilt. These pieces are layered onto Blueberry Bushel cardstock.
The stitching and scallops of the 2 die sets used for the oval add to the warm homespun appeal
I used Gray Granite to stamp the image and colored with Blends. Seaside Spray makes a lovely weathered gray look.
"What Happens at Grandma's" is cut with the small, skinny stitched Rectangle die (#151820) and polished off with a Happiness Blooms enamel dot (#148805) in Calypso Coral.
Tie it up with a bow using Crushed Curry Crinkled Seam Binding.

Noble Peacock Rhinestone Trio

Do you have a cuppa something ready? I've got three cards that I've done over the past year, all featuring the elegant Nobel Peacock Rhinestones.

First let's take a look at another card I did while on the Dirty Girl Design Team last year:

Long story behind this card so skip to the next bullet point if you just want the card hints. I did this card last year when I first tried out the Noble Peacock Rhinestones. The blue butterfly is often used as a symbol for thyroid disease since your thyroid is "somewhat" shaped like a butterfly. A year ago this week I was diagnosed with Graves disease, which means that my immune system got a little carried away and caused my thyroid to produce too much thyroid hormone. That, in turn, made it difficult for me to sleep etc. Luckily my health care provider caught it early. Between a little medication and some lifestyle changes, we got it turned around though it has taken the better part of the past year to get my sleep back to where it was before. That's pretty much why my blogging has been so much less regular. Anyway, that very same week I was asked to join the Dirty Dozen Design Team over on Splitcoaststampers. I'm so grateful I had that design team, along the the Splitcoaststamper Color Challenge Design team to keep me stamping when it would have been very easy to let my creativity slide.
Last June the Dirty Dozen theme called for some bling and I designed this card to meet the challenge, featuring the Noble Peacock Foil and rhinestones. Usually I design cards to be for others, but in this case the card was really for me. Today I look at it differently and, of course, think that it would be a good greeting for just about anyone in our troubled world.
Last June was the first time I did this 90 degree turn technique with the Subtle embossing folder. It shows the best when using the Foil papers, in this case Noble Peacock Foil (#149945 - I forgot this one while making the product list.) All you need to do is run your paper through your embossing tool twice, turning your paper 90 degrees in the folder before running it through the second time.
I cut the petal design out 4 times: once in each color of foil and once in white. Then I paper pieced the various colors into the white "frame".
Once I chose the sentiment I just knew I needed a blue butterfly. (The antennae were stamped with Butterfly Gala, #148580.)
I used a rhinestone in the center of each flower and also on the body of the little butterfly.

This card was done for a color challenge that I hosted a few weeks ago. It called for Pool Party + Pretty Peacock + Rococo Rose with stripes for dessert.
I mixed Pool Party refill with white craft refill and swiped the stripes with a sponge dauber.
The Pretty Peacock border is cut with the border die from the Stitched Be Mine dies.
The beautiful flowered branch is from the Forever Blossoms Bundle. I stamped the branch with Basic Gray and colored it with the color challenge Blends Combos. I cut two extra branches with the corresponding die so that branch is extra solid, almost as thick as a puzzle piece.
One more greeting that is easy to send to anyone these days along with another sprinkling of Noble Peacock Rhinestones, this time just in Pretty Peacock.

Lastly, I have my card for this week's color challenge which has us revisiting a few of last year's In-Colors: Lemon-Lime Twist + Berry Burst + Powder Pink with "thank you" for dessert.
I thought that this pretty Strawberry from Witty-cisms would work perfectly so I embossed the image in white and watercolored with my aquapainter and ink that I picked up from the covers of my ink pads. (squeezing the older style pads before opening them)
I used a couple of punches, the Scalloped Tag Topper and Detailed Trio punch to make the tag with rounded corners.
I thought a basket weave background would make the perfect setting for my strawberry.
Once again, I embellished the card with a few rhinestones, this time the Old Olive stones, which worked beautifully with the Lemon-Lime Twist. Here is a angled view which shows this a little better:

The Peaceful Poppies Suite Meets the Stitched Rectangle Dies

Happy Saturday everyone! I hope you are doing OK.

There's some happy news on the back-ordered die front. Several are once again available, including the both the Poppy Moments and the Painted Labels dies which I personally am waiting for. In the meantime, here is a card that I made with both of the Peaceful Poppies Suite sets: Painted Poppies and Peaceful Moments and the Stitched Rectangle dies.

Those little poppies are stamped in Basic Gray and colored with the Lovely Lipstick Blends combo. Note that these will be retiring soon as Lovely Lipstick is a retiring 2018-20 In Color.
All layers other than the base card are cut with the Stitched Rectangle Dies.
The vellum layer is stamped with the poppies in white craft ink.
The Peaceful Poppies DSP frame is cut with 2 of the rectangle frames.
Embellishments to the white layer include White Crinkled Seam Binding that has been colored with both the light and dark Lovely Lipstick Blends. This gives a variegated appearance.
Vellum embellishments are from the Peaceful Poppies Elements embellished just a bit with the Peaceful Poppies Sequins.

His & Hers Birthday cards with the Country Club Suite

I'm back today with a couple of birthday cards: His & Hers, both made with Stampin' Up!'s Country Club Suite.

Basic Gray, Smoky Slate and Blushing Bride with a touch of gold foil trim and embossing
Coloring was done with Stampin' Write markers and the blender pens: Smoky Slate, Blushing Bride, Mint Macaron and Pear Pizzazz. Using two greens sometimes gives a more realistic look to foliage.
The gray argyle with pink is a fun twist on what is normally a masculine vibe.
The Stitched Shapes circle in Basic Gray is the perfect base for my "pretty" golf ball and tee.
This was my mother's birthday card this past February.

Dad's birthday is in late November. They live in southern Arizona so golf is in season for both of their birthdays.

I made this shortly after receiving the Country Club designer series paper at Onstage last November.
Since I only had the paper to work with at the time, I trimmed the focal point design from one of the papers and relied heavily on the blue and green argyle to carry the rest of the design.
A Wish for Everything Bundle provides the birthday sentiment and the Stitched Nested Label Dies helped me to tie it all together.

Last a Lifetime Meets Bird Ballad Laser Cut Cards

This week's color challenge over at Splitcoaststampers so soft and beautiful:

Petal Pink + So Saffron + Mint Macaron with Congratulations (baby, wedding, graduation) for dessert.

I'm not sure my dessert really counts but I used a greeting meant for wedding but versatile enough to be a more general greeting. It's hard not to look at every card I make as one that might just be used as a friendly hello.

Have you seen these beautiful Bird Ballad Laser Cut Cards? Simply. Gorgeous. !
I did a blended background of the three challenge colors on a white piece of cardstock. This involved mixing a bit of each of the colors with a little white ink and applying them with sponge daubers. I know some people use the makeup brushes to apply ink and if you have them by all means give them a try. I've tried them too but feel that the blendability that is added by the white ink makes the daubers easier on my wrists that are just a little arthritic.
I used my multipurpose adhesive lightly around the edges to attach the card to the background piece.
Tie a piece of Petal Pink Metallic-edged Ribbon around the card with a bow on the left side.
The greeting is stamped on Mint Macaron and cut out with a larger oval from the Stitched Shapes Dies. I applied it to the card with Stampin' Dimensionals.
The little flower sprays were stamped twice with Gray Granite ink, colored with the challenge colors Blends Combos - and Gray Granite Light Blends Marker. I trimmed the largest dotted branch off one of them and applied that to the lower right side of the oval. The full sized version is applied on top of this towards the right. I applied a little Wink of Stella as shown below:

Happy Easter!!!

How are you spending the Easter holiday during this unusual spring/year?

Our church put together a lovely internet service, probably as yours did.

Right now we are looking at blowing snow while my grandmother's recipe for Chicken and Rice bakes in the oven. They've been predicting this snow all week so I thought that would be a fitting, comfort food meal for today. I haven't made it in years.

As I type this the snow is starting to let up so we can see the Mississippi River again. We are only a few blocks away but the snow was too heavy to see it earlier.

I have been looking for ways to use this lovely little Old Olive die cut. It is made with two of the smaller die in the Ornate Layers dies. I just love the folk art type look but couldn't figure out what to do with it until I held it up to this partial image of the large floral spray from and decided to use it kind of like a book binding look.
I used Old Olive, Flirty Flamingo, Rococo Rose and a little Mango Melody Light Blends Markers for the coloring. I think those were the colors ... the piece was from a stash that I've kept near the TV as we've done some of our quarantine TV binging.
A little bit of Old Olive patterned paper from Ornate Garden Specialty DSP peeks out of the die cut layer.
I pulled the greeting from Easter Promise. It was perfect size for the space and I liked the non-traditional colors for this greeting.
In Color Faceted Dots in Rococo Rose finish off the "ornate" look.

It's Really Just All About the White Space

Today I'm here with a brand new, exciting blog hop group: Around the World on Wednesday. What fun! Though I've long appreciated that fact that Stampin' Up! is an international company, that seems even more special now as we all work together - and alone - in our own ways to get through these difficult days. So, I'm excited to share with you all and then to point you towards some friends around the world that share my passion for papercrafting.

This month's theme is "All Things Crafty" - things I need for my creativity. Hmmm? My first thought is everything in my craft room? Well then, what was the first thing I HAD to stock up on when faced with staying home for possibly weeks? White cardstock! 3 packs! So that's it. I need white space. When I look through some of my favorite work, it usually has quite a bit of white space. Today I'm going to share a couple of cards using a favorite sketch that show that white space is anything but plain and boring!

Both cards use the stamp set Vibrant Vases:

This is my latest version, featuring the Ornate Garden Specialty paper, Ornate Floral embossing folder and Gilded Gems, along with the Vase Builder Punch and the Vibrant Vases stamp set.

I just had to do an extra photo so you could see the pretty sparkle of the Gilded Gems and Gold Foil AND the beautiful texture of the Ornate Floral folder.
The pretty Mint Macaron with gold foil filigree specialty paper provides the theme for the overall look of this card. I used it for both my border and vases.
The foil used as the "surface" in my circle is run through the embossing folder and then turned 90 degrees and run through a second time giving it a textile type texture. I butt the embossed gold foil piece up to a piece of Whisper White thick and apply regular tape from the back before cutting these with the largest Stitched Shapes circle die.
I backed up the circle and the vases with extra shapes so these pieces are quite firm.
Stems in the filled vase are also from the Vase Builder punch.
One of the things I really like about this layout is that the measurements aren't fussy. You need some strips cut to the measurement of your card height for the border and another strip cut the width for your sentiment. You can vary the width of these as you see fit.

Here is the original card I "cased". I first designed it while I was part of the Dirty Dozen Design Team over on Splitcoaststampers last year. We created projects that could only be shared with their fan club for 6 months. Since I haven't yet shared it on my blog, today is a good time to share it here since it was the starting point for the first card.

I used a retired Simple Stripes folder for my "surface" since I didn't yet have the Pinewoood Planks folder which would be another good choice. Pinewood Planks is current as I write this.
I was working from a inspiration photo of traditional looking blue and white vases and was thrilled with the contemporary spin lent by the See a Silhouette Designer Series Paper. The solid vase in the middle is just the back side of the pattern with the white stripe-ish pattern.
The greens were cut from Granny Apple Green with dies from Bouquet Bunch.

Ornate Garden Meets Petal Pink and Terra Cotta Tile

I'm back today to share a few more items from the Ornate Garden Suite mixed in with some other favorites in my stamping stash. I hope these give you a few ideas if you finding a little more time to craft...

This card featuring the Hold on to Hope stamp set and coordinating dies could easily be an Easter, sympathy or thinking of you card.
Colors are Petal Pink with Terra Cotta Tile.
The background is done with the Ornate Floral 3D embossing folder.

I did this for a color challenge a few weeks back. After stamping the beautiful floral spray from Ornate Style in Tuxedo Black Memento ink, I used Lovely Lipstick, Pumpkin Pie and Petal Pink combos (even though the challenge called for Melon Mambo + Blushing Bride + Grapefruit Grove) since they were closest colors, along with the Mossy Meadow Combos. I'm on the design team for the Splitcoaststampers Color Challenge. The challenge allows us to use the closest colors you have to the listed challenge colors PLUS any colors from the Neutrals.
The 5th largest/4th smallest of the nested Stitched Rectangle Dies works great for fitting into this lacey frame from Ornate Layers Dies.
Greeting is from Ornate Thanks.

Doesn't the Ornate Border look so delicate in this simple Petal Pink Notecard?

One more that wasn't in the trio photo - no Petal Pink but it does use the Terra Cotta Tile, a color featured in the Ornate Garden Specialty Paper.
Daisy Lane was used for the greeting AND the Early Espresso stamped flower centers - stamped on Soft Suede and hand cut.
The border is another from Ornate Border Dies.
This also features the Ornate Garden ribbon which comes in Terra Cotta Tile and Old Olive.

Mixing It Up: Ornate Garden Meets Easter Promise

Hello everyone! I hope this post finds you and your loved ones well.

As I mentioned in a post last month, Stampin' Up! is doing an early release of one the the suites in the next annual catalog which goes live in June. The Ornate Garden Suite features two stamp/die bundles, a 3D embossing folder, specialty designer series paper, a pair of ribbons and some really elegant Gilded Gems. While I pre-ordered the whole suite, it is important to note that each part of it is very capable of standing on its own, mixing it up with other favorites in your stamping collection. I'm planning to send a few more Easter cards this year so today lets look at some parts of the suite with the Easter Promise stamp set.

In this first card I've just used the gold Gilded Gems to add the perfect finishing touch to my Easter Promise crocus card.
The image is one that I gold embossed and then packed along with my blender pen and watercolor pencils when we vacationed in February.
I used my Stitched Rectangle dies to cut the image before layering it over a strip of gold foil that I embossed the Subtles 3D embossing folder.
Turn the foil 90 degrees and run it through a second time to get the woven texture.

These next two cards show off the ornate lace dies found in both the frames and borders die sets:

I used a mix of Blends alcohol markers to color in the pretty floral spray from the Ornate Style stamp set: Granny Apple, Highland Heather, Daffodil Delight, Mango Melody with just a touch of Pumpkin pie in the centers of the big flowers and Seaside Spray for a hint of background color.
What do you think of the pretty eyelet like border?
The gold foil patterned paper from Ornate Garden Specialty paper is easy to color so that the papers can coordinate with any color scheme you like. I used my Highland Heather Light Blends marker to color this border. There are also plenty of beautifully colored patterns to inspire you too!
I used some Pearl Basic Jewels and polka dot tulle ribbon to finish off this card.

This card features another crocus image that I colored with watercolor pencils.
I cut it with the 4th smallest of the large set of nesting Stitched rectangles. this size fits perfectly in this pretty laced layer from the Ornate Frames dies. I'll be showing other rectangles from this same die set that are great with these frames - in future posts.
